Sedation Dentistry

Dental treatment is no more a stressful experience!

Stepping into a dental clinic is the greatest fear for a significant fraction of our population. Many people are ready to withstand the dental pain rather than going to a dentist. Well, for people who are dental ‘phobic,’ we now have a concept of sedation dentistry to ease your anxiety.  This procedure of performing treatments under sedation is the latest and most prized advancement in dentistry. Procedures starting from simple cleaning to invasive treatments such as extractions and implant placement can be performed under sedation.

Sedative dentistry drugs:

Sedation dentistry comprises of administrating sedative drugs for dental treatments that may take a considerable amount of time and is best advised for people with extreme dental anxiety or for children who are anxious and begin to move around. Various sedative drugs work in different ways. While certain medications help to calm you and provide comfortable dental visits, others control the pain and may even put you into a deep sleep. Sedation dentistry is a universal concept that it can be done for patients of all ages. With the exemption of those treated under general anesthesia, most patients are usually awake during sedation.

What method of sedation is best for you?

The method and degree of sedation are decided based on specific factors such as the extent of anxiety of the patient and other factors such as age or type of procedure to be performed.

Your dentist will consider the factors mentioned above, and after careful analysis, we will help you decide the type of sedation that’s apt for you. The dental procedure planned for you, your overall health, any history of allergies, the level of anxiety are the primary factors taken into consideration before concluding the best approach to manage your case. Following are the methods of sedation.

Inhalation sedation

Inhalation sedation is a conscious form of sedation that includes the usage of a gaseous form of nitrous oxide commonly known as “laughing gas” to help you relax and get rid of your anxiety. It is in a dosage which is mild enough to keep you conscious and equally strong enough to suppress pain during treatments. This is the only form of sedation where you may be able to drive yourself home after your dental visit.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation is delivered in the form of pills by mouth to calm and relax patients. Oral sedative medications are usually administered the night before or half an hour before dental procedures depending on the severity of your anxiety and procedure to be performed. Subject to the dosage, this can vary from minimal sedation (awake but still relaxed) to moderate sedation (words are slurred, and some may not even remember the entire duration of the procedure).

Intravenous IV Sedation

This is the best and most controlled method sedation. The drug is administered through the vein, and since it is directly injected into your bloodstream, the effect sets on real quickly. There is an added advantage where your dentist can control the level, of sedation anytime during the procedure.

Deep Sedation and general anesthesia:

Deep sedation achieves complete unconsciousness and is mainly employed by your dentist when

•  the procedure planned is lengthy, difficult or painful

•  when you are extremely anxious

•  Some behavioral issues which make it impossible for the doctor to carry out the treatment.

The cost of carrying out sedative dental procedures varies depending upon the sedative method chosen, duration of sedation and the drug usage.
