Root canal Treatment ,Procedure, Steps,Costs explained.

Best option? Save your natural tooth.

A 'root canal' is a natural cavity or space located within the center of the tooth. It comprises the pulp chamber which is the living tissue of the tooth. It has rich blood and nerve supply and provides nutrients to the tooth. The root canal has small additional canals that connect to each other or the external surface of the root of the tooth.

How does a pulp get infected?

Let me quote an incident which happened in our very own clinic.

Mr. Venkatesh (name changed) came to our dental clinic with a pain in the lower right back tooth region for past one week. He stated that his pain aggravated every time he tried to eat something cold, and for the past two days it even began to hurt during the night when he tried to sleep. “I can feel the pain radiating, and it is now causing a headache too!” he quoted.

This my friends, are the stage at which all of you run to your dentists! Well, we did a thorough examination in the clinic and used x-ray to check if there was any infection inside the root region and thankfully, the infection has just started to spread near the root.

Root canal treatment was immediately done, and a crown given in subsequent appointments. Now Mr.Venkatesh is completely relieved of his pain and is having a healthy smile!

So how does this happen?

Bacteria ferment the sugar products from the food and plaque fixed onto the tooth surfaces and produce acids. These acids dissolve the protective enamel layer and begin to invade deeper into the tooth structure. Once it reaches the pulp, that is when pain symptoms begin to manifest. Pain on consuming hot/cold food, on lying down posture, etc. are indicative of dental caries that has reached the pulp.

If left unattended at this stage, these bacteria continue to spread into the underlying tissues and cause infections, forming pockets or abscesses filled with pus at the roots of the tooth. This condition causes extreme pain and swelling that may spread to other regions of the face or head. Serious infections can also cause bone loss around the tip of the tooth roots. A visit to the dentist will best decide the ways to deal with each particular case.

A root canal is a procedure that is done to remove the infected and damaged tissue from the root canal and to restore it.

Procedure for root canal treatment:

•  Local anesthesia is given to relieve the existing pain. So it a painless procedure and there is nothing to be worried about.

•  After sufficient anesthesia is achieved, the infection from the tooth is removed, and the pulp chamber is entered.

•  All the infected tooth material will be removed and cleaned using instruments and a wash with disinfectants. In case of a deeply infected tooth, an intracanal medication is placed and filling done on a later appointment.

•  Filling of the root canal will be done on the same day, or on a later appointment and the canal is sealed.

Instructions to be followed post root canal treatment

Do not bite or chew on the tooth in which root canal has been performed immediately.

Capping or crowning of tooth  root canal treatment would be required. A full ceramic/metal ceramic crown will usually be advised .Your doctor will provide you with the best options, and you can choose from them.

Prevention is better than cure’. These are golden words which apply to every aspect of our daily life. So if you notice a small decay on your tooth surface, it is highly recommended that you go to your dentist at this stage itself, rather than wait for the decay to spread and pain to begin. It is always earlier the better.

Debunking the Myth

While there are plenty of queries regarding the effectiveness of root canal (endodontic) treatment, there are a couple of misinformation that continues to circulate online.

MALLIGAI DENTAL HOSPITAL continuously works on educating the public about root canal safety while debunking the myths that root canals cause cancer or other health problems.

Till date, there are no valid scientific conclusions, evidence or studies that have linked root canal treatment with diseases elsewhere in the body and there is no cause and effect relationship between cancer and root canal treatment.

In fact, a 2013 study published in a journal of the American Medical Association found that a patient’s risk of cancer does not alter after having a root canal treatment. Additionally, researchers found that patients with multiple endodontic treatments had a reduced risk of cancer by 45%.
