Dental Emergencies

Accidents tend to happen, and it can happen to anyone. It is not the accident as such that affects us, but how to manage it spontaneously. It is normal to have panic attacks when accidents happen, but it is equally important to resolve it and act quickly. When it comes to a dental emergency, it can be the matter of saving or removing a tooth.

Any visible injury to a tooth – be it fractures, broken fillings or crowns - should be managed and treated as soon as possible. If it hurts, it's an emergency, and it has to be handled. If you call us right away, our dental experts can repair the damage and prevent it from getting worse.

Following are the most common dental emergencies one can encounter, and it is a must to know basic management principles

Avulsed/Dislodged Permanent Teeth

Well for a dislodged permanent tooth, the primary aim is to handle the tooth with care without touching the root portion. This is because the root is what contains the viable cells to reattach when placed inside the socket. The next important thing is not to allow the tooth to dry. Keep it moist by putting it in milk, or you can also hold the teeth in your mouth by placing it between the gums and cheek. Report to us as immediately as possible.

 Avulsed/Dislodged Milk teeth:

The management of a dislodged milk teeth is similar to that of a permanent adult tooth. Keep the tooth moist and handle with care. Once you are in the dental office, we will evaluate the tooth and decide whether it has to be re-implanted or we can set it aside to allow permanent tooth development.

Cracked tooth

If you have a broken tooth, rinse your mouth and keep the area clean. If there is a swelling in the region, you can apply cold compression in that region and report immediately to us.

 Manage a toothache

In cases of severe tooth pain, first, rinse your mouth to remove the debris from the decayed tooth region or gums. Floss or use an interdental brush to remove debris between teeth. You can obtain an over the counter medication such as brufen etc. to temporarily resolve the pain and report to your dentist at the earliest.

 Fractured Jaw

Immediately apply cold compression on the swelling and report to our clinic at the earliest. Try not to move your jaw much and keep it immobilized.

Avoid dental emergency!

Even though accidents are inevitable, there are specific precautionary methods that we can undertake to reduce the extent of an injury

•  It is mandatory to use a mouth guard while playing sports or other activities.

•  Avoid chewing very hard food such as hard candy or popcorn kernels which may crack your teeth.

•  Never use your teeth to open bottles or any other object for that matter.
